I have been reflecting on this past year, and on how much of it I have given to writing.
Last July I published Big God, Little Devil. I have written more than a hundred essays since. What began as a book turned into the discovery of a gift I did not know I had, and a place to think out loud and share what I am seeing.
The best part has not been the writing. It has been the feedback, and the community that formed around it. That has meant more to me than I know how to say.
And as I make this shift, I am praying for direction as I keep going down this creative road.
What a year looks like when you count it
I counted this week, because I wanted to know rather than assume.
There are one hundred and seventeen essays here in all, a hundred and eight of them in the last twelve months. Across the five categories I use on my site: AI & Being Human, 45. The Interior Life, 24. Deliverance & Spiritual Warfare, 22. Church & Culture, 14. Psychology & Healing, 12.
The drift is what interests me. In 2025 I wrote eight essays about AI and sixteen about deliverance. In 2026, thirty-seven about AI and six about deliverance. The line that did not move is the interior life: twelve and twelve. The subject changed. The thing I was actually writing about did not.
There is a hole in that record too. Between the middle of February and the beginning of April I published nothing. Not one essay in March, during my 40 Days Without a Phone.
The part I want to name honestly
My work as a therapist has been sacred work. To accompany a person in their pain and their story, their halting attempts to become whole, is not ordinary labor. I do not regret a single hour of it.
But this year I have significantly reduced my clinical hours, on purpose, because a sense has been forming in me that God may be inviting me to care for people through other gifts as well. Writing, teaching, giving language to what a great many people are already living but cannot yet name. These have begun to feel like their own form of care rather than a departure from it.
I do not know yet what final shape it takes. And I have a family to support, so discernment cannot stay purely interior. My prayer this year has not only been Lord, what are You asking of me. It has also been, quite honestly, Lord, how could this even become possible.
Where I actually am
Each of these essays gets somewhere around forty thousand views. About a 175 people support the work as paid subscribers, together somewhere around eleven hundred dollars a month. That is real money, but it is also nowhere near a clinical practice.
I want to be careful not to make that sound like nothing, because it is not nothing. Those hundred and seventy-five are a large part of why there were a hundred and eight essays this year rather than the handful I could have managed around a full caseload.
The essays stay free, and easy to share. There is no extra tier and no gated archive. You are not buying access to anything. But every hour I take out of the practice has to be paid for somehow, and a paid subscription is one of the ways that happens.
St. Paul was not embarrassed by this arrangement: writing to the Philippians, who had sent to him more than once, he said: “Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account” (Phil 4:17). It is older than the subscribe button. I am still learning not to be embarrassed by it.
What is coming
Three books are finished and close. A companion workbook to Big God, Little Devil. The Heart of Exorcism, which is in one sense my first book, drafted out of the same original manuscript (Effortless Deliverance) that became Big God, Little Devil, and held back deliberately until now. And Humanity in the Age of AI, the long-form version of what I have been circling here every week, which I started writing in October of 2025. I hope to continue my project on a book on dreams, a course to onboard people with the use of AI agents in a way that benefits our humanity, and have started transitioning my 80,000 subscriber YouTube channel - where I hope to produce more dynamic content to multiply the streams to share.
The years ahead are going to ask more of us than information. They are going to ask for formation, and voices that anchor us in or humanity and interiority. Our tools are growing more intimate and more persuasive, more able to shape imagination and desire and memory and attention themselves. And soon, they will permeate every part of society. The question will not only be whether we can use them well, but whether our interior life is solid enough to hold its shape while so much around us is engineered to move it.
A year after Big God, Little Devil, I still believe the thing I was trying to say then. God is larger than the thing that frightens us. I believe it more now than I did when I wrote it.
That is what I hope this space can be. A place to remember, to go deeper, and to be told once more that God is still bigger. Who leads his people through an inner exodus, to become carriers of His presence (Exodus 33:15-16).
