Dr. Tobin,

My whole job is decisions. And I have noticed I pray about them two different ways. Sometimes I bring the thing open. More often I bring it already made, and what I want is a blessing on it, not a look at it. I did not have words for that until this morning.

What you did that most men will not do is get specific about your own version of it. Not a general admission that we all hold something back. You wrote down the exact difference, about yourself, in public.

Here is a picture I would set beside it. Jacob stands in front of his blind father and the old man asks him who he is. He says, I am Esau. He walks out of that tent with the blessing, and it works, and he carries that answer for twenty years while nothing in his life falls apart.

Then he is alone at a river in the dark, wrestling a man he cannot see, and the man asks him the same question his father asked. What is your name. This time he says it. Jacob. He does not explain it. He says it out loud to somebody who has him by the hip.

The order is what I keep turning over. He does not get changed and then say the name. He says the name, and then he gets changed. And nothing in that scene is brave. He is worn out and cornered and holding on because he has nothing else to do with his hands. He walks out of that field limping and he keeps the limp.

So I am not going to promise I will start bringing everything open. What I can do is notice, before I pray, which way I am carrying the thing. That is not brave either. It is just saying the name out loud. I am going to try it this week, Sean.

This feels like the next “My Heart, Christs Home”, befitting our more modern era! I’m gonna sit with a few of these nuggets for a while - personally and ministry wise!

“He has installed his faith in a way that cannot reach his goals.”

“ I have gotten good enough at this that from the outside, and most days from the inside, it looks like a serious interior life. The prayer is real. The love is real. So is the wall, and I am the one who maintains it.”
